Exploring Byzantine Stucco with Dr Flavia Vanni

In this episode we are joined by Dr Flavia Vanni, a Postdoctoral researcher at the British School at Athens, to talk about the study of Byzantine Stucco techniques. We are also talking about Dr Vanni’s recent work on the stucco of Hosios Loukas and her current research project at the British School at Athens. You can also listen to it on Spotify.


Understanding Byzantine Urbanism with Dr Luca Zavagno

In this episode, we are joined by Dr Luca Zavagno, Associate Professor at Bilkent University, to talk about the study of the cities in Byzantium. We analyse the terminology that is used to describe the cities and many other features of the study of Byzantine cities. You can also listen to it on Spotify.

Βυζάντιο explained was founded by Gavriil-Ioannis Boutziopoulos, a PhD Candidate at the University of Birmingham, and Panagiotis Mermigkas, a MA graduate at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. In each episode the hosts invite scholars to talk about their work, new publications in our field, interesting aspects of Byzantine history and society, and matters of general academic interest. Giannis Stouraitis, Nikos Tsivikis, Georgios Theotokis, Dionysios Stathakopoulos, Dimitris Krallis, Flavia Vanni and Luca Zavagno are some of their guests so far. Also, they have invited artists whose work is inspired by Byzantine history.


In addition to the podcast, they have also produced an audio documentary about Byzantine history, which is written and narrated by Dimitrios Bogdantsalis, a PhD candidate at the Democritus University of Thrace. This is called “Ιστορίες από το Βυζάντιο” (Stories from Byzantium) and it narrates Byzantine history based only on primary sources.

Βυζάντιο explained aims to promote Byzantine Studies and attract more students to our academic field. So far, their episodes have been viewed and listened to more than 50.000 times on YouTube and Spotify and the vast majority of the listeners are students and scholars.
